selecting the right tree

  1. I live in the N Okanagan, Vernon. I am in search of two trees for my yard.
I have a sun exposed, West facing, wind blown site in which I want to plant a new tree. I had a large weeping willow there before but it had to be removed and I presently have another large weeping willow 20 feet away. I would like a large, hardy tree for shade and good appearance. Deciduous leaves are no problem. At maturity, 30+ feet height is good. Any suggestions? I have >25 birch and Elm on my property already so a different species would be great.

Also, I have sunny, East facing area adjacent to my deck which I want to plant a large, single trunk, shade tree. Deciduous leaves are alright but I want a non-messy/no-droppings tree. I will likely try to plant a large tree to get a head start. Any suggestions?

I am not sure of your location but if you are in zone 4 or warmer and you have patience I recommend Ginkgo biloba.
