I'm having trouble imagining what this plant will ultimately look like, or if I've seen it before. Right now, the leaves look like a pinwheel with tendrils at the ends, and there's a jack-in-the-pulpit shaped flower about to open (or maybe that's open). I neglected to get size info - maybe 50cm tall, leaves 12cm? I'm not at all sure of my memory on this. Are they even leaves or leaflets I'm looking at? There were two of these, and I think the other did not even have leaves open, on the south side of the main path in the Asian Garden.
Re: At UBCBG - leaves in pinwheel leaf arrangement with long tendrils It is an Arisaema sp. Possibly Arisaema consanguineum.
Re: At UBCBG - leaves in pinwheel leaf arrangement with long tendrils Agree, and what you're looking at are leaflets. The entire structure supported by the petiole is the leaf.
Re: At UBCBG - leaves in pinwheel leaf arrangement with long tendrils I should have said that your pic 2 is it! That is as good as it gets. The wonderful single leaf is divided into 12 or so leaflets that end with long fine points. The flowering structure of the spathe/ spadix also shows in your pic They can sometimes get tall to 6ft. Ours just get to about 3.5ft I find them all Arisaema fascinating.
This one-leafed Arisaema consanguineum on the main path at UBCBG still looks the same, but today I got to see the developing fruit. I wasn't originally sure if it was coming or going, but I read that they're supposed to turn red, so coming. A photo I found shows seeds ranging from green to red, and all a similar size, so I'm assuming all those little seeds will expand to be like the larger ones.
Oh, so maybe this is it. Now I wonder if they'll all turn red. I'll have to go out there more often and remember to look, since we don't seem to have any Arisaema scouts.
