I would like to know what this plant is. It seems to spread by rhizomes sometimes as thick as my thumb and up to 8 inches long. It appears that the previous owner has used this plant is some very wet areas. It seems somewhat scraggy to me and I'm looking to find out if it needs some different care to appear more robust.

    Thanks!

If it is Acorus calamus as it seems to be, the previous owner most likely grew it for its numerous uses and medicinal properties, see Acorus calamus - Wikipedia.

Another, much less likely, possibility is that it is another quite useful plant, a Typha sp. see Typha - Wikipedia

I don't think it's Typha, would expect it to be more upright in overall impression.

Yes, I agree, it is why I said that it is much less likely possibility.
