White Pine cultivar planted in 2011 that died this year. I noticed a swelling at the base. Where planted, it was not exposed to "weed whackers." Any ideas on what could have caused its demise?

    Root girdling, my thought.

    Mulch volcano?
Tree planted too deep? In a hole too small?

Ditto to root girdling. Problems start from planting potbound trees with roots going round and round in circles at the bottom of the pot.
