Hi Ron, Thank you very much. It looks so "real" as like cherry. I have removed the pictures. First timer. "Arigato"

I'm a bit late with these, taken on the 11th at the ICBC headquarters. In the second photo are 'Akebono' on the west side of the building; the next photo is another large planting of 'Akebono' on the north side facing the plaza.

North of the ICBC building facing the street is a large planting of 'Shirotae'.

On 3rd St at St Andrews, northeast corner, are two 'Umineko'. Or maybe they're 'Snow Goose' - I don't know when that cultivar started replacing 'Umineko'.

North Van doesn't seem as overrun with 'Kanzan' as is Vancouver. They're used very effectively here on the Lynn Valley Road median, groups of ten or so every few blocks. These are looking north from Mollie Nye Way. The first photo is thru the windshield.

This treeat 4th and Mahon is 100% in bloom, couldn't see any leaves and not sure if it is a cherry or plum. Cross-checked cultivars and neighborhood forums for this location, doesn't appear to be listed before - help appreciated with my first tree identification! [Edited by wcutler: it's a nice 'Whitcomb' cherry - one we're happy to know about.]

    Tabular to spreading tree.
5 petals mid pink colour - blossoms are smaller than a penny.

North Vancouver Blossom Update - March 21, 2012

As a new cherry scout I thought I would read all the forums and recap the previously identified cherry trees in North Vancouver and also provide an update of some new potential locations. I visited the following locations today:

    Lower Lonsdale:
    1. Akebono - ICBC building (Rogers and Esplanade) North and West side - 0% in bloom
    2. Shirotea - ICBC building - North side - 0% in bloom
    3. Akebono - West 4th St. northside at Chesterfield Ave. - 0% in bloom
    4. 249 E 4th St. btwn. St. Georges and St. Andrews - 10 Akebono - 0% in bloom - also 2 Shirotea up closer to the building
    5. E. 3rd St. and St. Andrews N.E. Corner - Umineko or Snow Goose - 0% in bloom
    6. new location not yet identified: up to 10 smaller trees on the pedestrian walkway north of Jack Loucks Court - 100 block W. 1st Street - have contacted the landscape architect for a plant list - very beautiful blossoms last year and good photo opportunity, also quite near ICBC festival favourites. Will post preliminary photos in ornamental cherries identification forum - buds forming, last year they looked like Akebono.
    7. new location not yet identified: W. 4th St at Mahon - one tree 100% in bloom - maybe a Whitcomb or a plum - I have posted all photos of this in the ornamental cherry forum for help. - now identified as Whitcomb.

    Upper Lonsdale:
    8. 27th at St. Andrews - Beni-shidare - 0% in bloom
    9. Tempe at 29th - Akebono - 0% in bloom

    Mt. Seymour / Deep Cove:

    10. Panorama Park - Akebono - didn't get there yet.
    11. new location not yet identified: up to 12 slender trees columnar to conical in shape - will post pictures in ornamental cherries forum for identification. 0% in bloom. Location is Kiwanis Care Centre, Burr Place south of Berkley North Vancouver.
    12. new location not yet identified: Mount Seymour Parkway meridian near Browning - not in bloom - a dozen or so trees - will keep an eye on these.

    Lynn Valley

    13. Kanzan line the median along Lynn Valley Road near Mollie Nye Way - 0% in bloom.

A fun day, I now realize all the work involved - kudos to Wendy and others who are out there being 'SuperScouts".

270 W 5th Street near Mahon St - North Vancouver

March 27th - 'Pendula' now almost 100% in bloom - this is a new location not currently on the map - see 4 photos with today's date March 27th:

    previous comment March 23rd:
50% plus in bloom would be my best estimate

    Weeping bright pink cherry

    Prunus pendula
'Pendula' would be my best guess as blossoms are not fully out yet, or 'Beni-shidare'

Didn't get too close as tree is behind a gated yard.

Now in bloom - map text is updated as 2 cherry varieties now noted at this location:

Jack Loucks Court - 100 block W 1st Street North Vancouver

North of wooden bridge on sloped pedestrian walkway

5 'Akebono' now in bloom - pictures 1-3 attached

5 possible 'Shirotae' not yet in bloom - think they might be this variety as leaves and buds are bright green - see picture 4 attached - any ideas?

NB: This location is north of Festival Favourites at ICBC Esplanade/Rogers by taking red overpass walkway about 500 yards north to 1st St) - bloom update on these Festival Favourites to follow in another post

Photos taken at north end of ICBC Building Esplanade North Vancouver

Akebono-65% ? in bloom - see attached 3 photos - guessing on the percentage in bloom

Shirotae - 20% ? in bloom - you can see the beginning white blossoms of these trees beside 'Akebono'

Looks good for 'Shirotae' (note correct spelling). You'll know in less than a week.

New location - 2 shidare-akura' trees - 266 West 4th Street near Mahon - North Vancouver - have updated map with preliminary description

Found these 2 weeping branched trees Saturday, I think they fit 'Shidare-Zakura' cultivar description from the www.vcbf.ca website listing as they differ from the 'Beni-shidare' located a block away in the following ways:
    - much softer pink in colour whereas the 'Beni-shidare' a block away is still blooming a much deeper pink/magenta
    - tip of the pistil does stick out beyond the petals
    - shape of the buds are more open whereas the 'Beni-shidare' buds point downward more uniformly.

As I am learning enough about cherry trees just to be decidedly dangerous please do correct me if I am off track!

    4 photos attached

New location – 6 ‘Akebono’ – N.W. corner of West 14th Street at Chesterfield North Vancouver. Noticed 6th incomplete petal to determine these are most likely ‘Akebono’.

Have added to map with preliminary info.

New location – Mature ‘Somei-yoshino’ outside City Hall 100 block West 14th Street North Vancouver. Whiter in colour than the group of 'Akebono' across the street with smaller evenly formed 5 petal flowers.

Have added to map with preliminary info.

    New location
On the north side of the 100 block East 6th street near Lonsdale North Vancouver, a white 'Somei-yoshino' cherry tree is in full blossom and is flanked by 2 smaller 'Shirotae' trees nearby. At present the 'Shirotae' have only just begun to blossom.

Have added to map with preliminary info.

[edited by wcutler 2012apr11]: I'm calling this first one 'Akebono' - small stars in the centre of the flowers, grafted trees on private property, not likely to be 'Somei-yoshino'. I think it would look more like 'Akebono' if it had not been pruned.
