Identification: No Idea About Plants & Trees - Looking For Help!

Hello there.
I've found a real interest in the flora surrounding my property but I don't know what any of it is or how to take care of it properly. There a a lot of sick trees surrounded by these spindly bushes which seem to grow and grow and grow! It looks like these plants are basically chocking the trees. What are these trees? What are the plants that grow at their bases? The terrain is super rocky. I would really appreciate any information and guidance. Many thanks!

 

Maple trees. It looks like there are lots of sprouts coming from the base of the plant or just a bunch of seedlings. You could just cut those off at the ground.
