I saw this beautiful tree in East Vancouver last week, and can't figure out what it is. It has bark like a Himalayan cherry, with lenticels looking more cherry-like than birch-like, but the leaves are similar to lilac. The branching/leaves appears mostly opposite, especially on new shoots, but seems a bit irregular on older wood.

Does anyone have any idea what this is?

A species of lilac from the foliage; Syringa pekinensis looks a good bet from the bark.

Thanks Michael - that's it! I had never seen one before. They're beautiful.
