I bought a fig tree 2 Septembers ago from the UBC Botanical Garden shop. It was a tall stick when I bought it. It is still a tall stick (see the attached photo). Last year it unfurled a number of large leaves at the top and one fig which ripened. This year it looks to be unfurling some more large leaves at the top, but no side branches as yet. How do I encourage the growth of side branches?

If you have it in the shade it may be trying to grow up into the sun.

Have you tried to cut the top of that main branch? Typically that forces it to shoot side branches. Others have been able to prune it right down and it'll branch out from the bottom as well (to form more of a bush).
