Very beautiful Shirofugen at the corner of 70Ave & Hudson Str.(Marpole Place)

Lots of early blooming cherries at Westport(Fraser River & 75Ave). I remember living in Marpole so many cherries in this place, I am sure there are Akebono and Shirotae and probably Whitcomb or Accolade

 

Kanzan and Shirofugen at gas station 41Ave & Granville Str

 

The 'Accolade' trees on 61st between Manitoba and Ontario have showed up here almost every year. They're putting on a good show.


A block away, on 60th at Ontario, is single 'Accolade' on a block of plum trees.

 

Last Friday was 'Beni-shidare' day for me. Here's a beauty at Angus and 58th, just inside the Marpole line. It's really finished blooming now.

I went to see these 'Tai-haku' that run the block from Angus to East Blvd on Adera. They were at peak bloom.


I was surprised that the 'Kanzan' looked about as close to blooming as in the West End.

 

Three good looking mature 'Umineko' on west side of Oak Street, south of 70 Ave.




I noticed another 'Umineko' squeezed between an old house (8611 Oak), and the apartment right next to it (8617 Oak)
Backyard of old house has a couple of 'Beni-shidare'. 'Umineko' seems to like the fireplace of old house. Probably trying to warm up, like the rest of us. Brrr.

'Sendai-shidare' at 711 West 66Ave looking green around the gills. Lots of leaves.

 

'Yae-beni-shidare' at 744 W66 Ave. I'm guessing at the address, because the house is so new it doesn't have a number yet. 'Yea-beni-shidare' on yard is much older than the house.
Fence looks old, too.

 

Here's an update on the row of trees on the west side of Winona Park, both sides of Yukon at 59th. They don't form an arch yet, but they're getting there. And they're beautiful trees, either not grafted or low grafted, not too many limbs at the top of the trunk. I saw them two days ago, and they were well past peak.

 

I like to feature improbable intersections. This 'Somei-yoshino' is at the intersection of West 63rd and West 64th, a block south of Winona Park.


On 63rd, between 64th and Columbia, are three 'Spire', improbable trees at an improbable intersection. These don't really look worse than most others of this cultivar.

 

On 64th west from Ash is a street of old 'Akebono', with some plums and some newly planted 'Shiro-fugen'.

And one 'Somei-yoshino', south side near Ash.

And around the corner on Ash, one fairly young 'Akebono', low grafted on suckering Colt rootstock.

 

At the corner of 68th and Heather, as Joseph Lin mentioned last year, are 'Somei-yoshino' on 68th, 'Akebono' on Heather, and one 'Afterglow' on Heather. I have a history of running into Joseph while chasing down cherries, so was happy that he spotted me from the car in which he was riding, and stopped to tell me the local highlights.

This is 68th, 'Somei-yoshino'.


The 'Akebono' trees on Heather are between the very close streets of 67th and 68th, a few trees both sides.


Next to the 'Akebono' on the west side of Heather is the 'Afterglow', a much better example than ones I saw recently in Kitsilano and Burnaby.

I neglected to add this tree at 8401 Cambie to our map, but Gent Ng has just done that for me, with a comment:

Planted by Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, president of the Soka Gakkai International, poet & author, peacebuilder, Buddhist phillosopher and author, during his 1993 visit to Vancouver. This cherry tree blooms every year with a light-pink hue in April-May timeframe.

Discovered a few photos that I took on March 28th, 2018 at the Husky Station at Marine Drive and West 70th Avenue. Not sure of the cultivar.

These 'Akebono' could use a little more light, but they fill up the courtyard space nicely. Off 54th, south side, just east of Oak.

 

'Akebono' on west side of Cambie, just south of 57th.

 

Lots of 'Akebono' to be seen on Manitoba and 60th.
