Re: Accolade - Hastings Sunrise, E. 5th from Nootka to Lillooet

These are great now. A whole street of large Accolades on both sides of the street - this photo shows only half the block, and looking from the west, you're on a hill looking down on them, and there's a view of Burnaby mountain.

    Beautiful Pictures!
This location must be superb! I'll visit there!
But these trees aren't Whitcombs. They are Akebono.
Whitcomb is early blooming cherry and they have already finished in almost every part of Vancouver. And petals of Whitcombs don't make a petal carpet. Most (more than half) of them stay on the branches and become brown.

When you visit Graveley, also stop by at 6th Ave, Penticton to Slocan. It's actually very exciting to turn east off Nanaimo on 5th and see them off in the distance over on 6th. These photos are from April 10 and they're looking great now. Someone could watch these and try to get the Akebono "snow" photos while the trees still look good.

    Re: Hastings-Sunrise - Schmitt

Joseph, guess what?! I found a whole block of "Tiny", which seem to be Schmitt. It's a long block with 13 of these really tall trees all on the south side - or maybe it just seemed they were tall because the street is so narrow. The others are a block on West 6th; these are on East 6th, the block west of Renfrew. The trees look great, but the flowers aren't all that visible.

    * Finished - Kanzan - Hastings-Sunrise on Nanaimo from Pandora to Venables

Young Kanzans line Nanaimo Street on one side from Venables to around Hastings, and then they continue north for two blocks on both sides. The street is so wide and the trees so small that it's not really the intensity of colour found two blocks west around 2nd and Templeton, but it's a nice splash of colour on a busy street.

    Schmittii - Hastings-Sunrise, E 6th from Kaslo to Renfrew

I love these Schmitt cherries - Prunus x schmittii (P. avium x P. canescens), though it seems they're an acquired taste, as it were. One of the scouts thought of the ones on West 6th at Arbutus that they "were hopeless-the flowers are so small". It's true the trees seem so hugely tall, and the flowers are so teeny and way up there. But the flowers are so sweet, and the trees are so grand and generally healthy-looking. And there are so many of them on the both those blocks. The two streets with about 13 of these trees stuffed onto one block are on 6th Ave, but on opposite sides of the city. These are on E 6th, from Kaslo to Renfrew.
    23-SchmittiiE6.gif 20090415_6thKaslo_Schmittii_Cutler_DSC01959.jpg 20090415_6thKaslo_Schmittii_Cutler_DSC01966.jpg 20090415_6thKaslo_Schmittii_Cutler_DSC01961.jpg

When you're there, just a block away on 6th, from Slocan to Penticton, is a street with Akebonos on both sides forming an arch over the street, almost as smashing as the Graveley block that's a festival favourite every year.

    Re: Hastings-Sunrise - first posting in 2009

    First posting in 2009

I'll bet Hastings-Sunrise has some nice trees, but we can't seem to get anyone to scout them out. I know there are Whitcombs on Nanaimo, east side, south of Cambridge, and Accolades in a yard on Nanaimo, west side, north of Cambridge (these might still be in bloom). There is the matter that most of the city's 17,000 plums seem to be planted in Hastings-Sunrise, so maybe there's not a lot of room for cherries.

There are a few whole-street plantings in this neighbourhood. See last year's posting of the Accolades at 5th and Nootka - they were still in bloom on April 16. For Akebonos, in addition to the festival favourites on Graveley at Windermere, here's another block of big old Akebonos forming an arch on 6th between Penticton and Slocan.
    20090415_6thPenticton_Akebono_Cutler_DSC01953.jpg 20090415_6thPenticton_Akebono_Cutler_DSC01954.jpg

According to City of Vancouver Park Board records, the young trees at the end of the block, at 2690, 2687, 2652, 2642 E 6th, are Sargentii. Well, if I'm not going to believe what they tell me, why did I ask, but the shape of this one doesn't seem much like the Sargentii trees I saw today. The others you can see in the background of the first photo above seem to be the right shape.

Re: Akebonos - Hastings-Sunrise, on Graveley from Lillooet to Windermere

Here they are - fully out. They don't last long. Maybe you can time your visit to catch them when the ground is littered with Akebono snow. While you're in the neighbourhood, stop by at 6th and Penticton for a similar display, and 6th and Kaslo for the Schmittii festival favourites. And check 5th and Nootka to see if the Accolades are still in bloom.

These rows of Akebonos on Graveley & Windermere St. are the most beautiful block in Vancouver.

One of the many Japanese Cherry cultivars, my best guess being 'Hokusai'.

Prunus x yedoensis. 'Hokusai' belongs to a different group and is rare here.

    Re: Graveley Beauty Continued

OH you did post them, guidingcricket, and I didn't find them until just now when I was looking for something I think I posted a long time ago. Thanks for doing the postings. They're our festival favourite Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono' trees on Graveley. I'm going to move all the Gravelely St cherry postings into the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, and the plums one into the Plums thread, all under the VCBF forums.
