The following was received via email:

Is it possible to identify a grape from leaf shape? The grapes are black, large bunches but loosely held. The flavour is like licorice, pungent and very palatable.

    I got it from Switzerland.

    Much appreciated.

From the leaf silouettes, it looks like your plant could be one of the American grapes, such as V. riparia (riverbank grape) or possibly, a hybrid. See this link to the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center. Then again, it could be a cultivated grape of more complex parentage.

Unfortunately, it is very hard to identify such things without a more detailed account; e.g., size, shape, colouring and surface characteristics of the fruit, size and shape of mature leaves, size and vigor of the vine, etc. Pictures would help a great deal.
