Fountain Grasses (winterizing)

Discussion in 'Poaceae' started by Unregistered, Nov 24, 2005.

  1. I live in California (Bay Area) and I was wondering when to cut my plants down for the winter and how long should I leave the stems.

the grasses should be Ok in the bay area if you leave them alone. grasses grow from a basal meristem (growing point) and do need that protected from frost and cold winds. unless the plant looks really ugly leave the stems alone so that they form a protective barrier to the wind and cold. remove any dead and dying parts next year when you see the new growth appearing. the outside leaves will be act like a down jacket forming a protective layer.
