Ok, I've applied a patch that many other forums have been having some success with re: the spontaneous logging out issue:

Re: special characters

The page headers of the UBC Forums web pages indicate the World Wide Web Consortium ISO-8859-1 character set is used: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />

Alt+number is not part of that specification: to properly display (special) characters, the following format must be used:

ampersand number-sign number semi-colon

&#*;

where * represents number.

Not all numbers are supported: I have generated a table here using numbers 1 through 512, showing how to format the character and how it will display on compliant browsers.
