I took this in Monte Verde, Costa Rica... beautiful mauve flower and it looks great the owl butterfly sitting on it. I have no idea what it is! Anyone?

In this hemisphere it would be a Dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia species).

Indeed, Aristolochia grandiflora, a native Costa Rican with the largest flower in Costa Rica.

The plant has numerous fascinating attributes, including the alkaloids which Aristolochians contain in their leaves. Butterflies feed on the leaves and perhaps thusly earn the distaste of would-be predators.

The plant also traps some of its smaller pollinators (flies) for a day and then lets them go. The flower itself doesn't linger long.

It's a species well known to the Ticos, because of its interesting nature.
