I found the pictured mushroom on the side of a gravelly path in forested area. It is obviously of the Boletes family. From looking at other photos I think it is a Common Scaber Stalk and therefore edible. Comments?

Some people (myself included) get very ill from Leccinum (scaber stalks). Otherwise, many people eat them will no ill effects. It's up to you, but think twice before feeding them to anyone else.

Thanks for your quick reply. I infere from it that this mushroom can be tolerated by some people but not by others, so why take a chance? I better stick to the chanterelles...

And I should add that it doesn't taste that great anyway.

In Bulgaria they pickle leccinum and suillus species with spices and serve them as a salad with a garlic, oil, and vinegar dressing. It's extremely tasty.

Thanks for the caution, but I assure you I am not one eating mushrooms on guessing. There are simply too many variables out there, and to make a mistake as a result of some culinary titillation is not worth it!
