Do you recognize it?

    Hi.

    I really hope someone can help (especially considering the fact that I'm worthless at tree identification).
    I took this from the end of one of this tree's big ol branches. I'd REALLY love to know what kind of tree it is.
    Any help at all would be greatly and tremendously appreciated.

    One of the oaks in the red oak group, such as scarlet oak or pin oak.

    One more question though... how can you tell the difference between oaks? The color of the bark? The shape of the tree? The flowers that bloom? ~*isn't sure if oak trees bloom anything*~

    It could also be Acer tridentatum....ie "Trident Maple"
