I had an Acer p. ssp. matsumurae seedling which would turn such a dark purple red that it was almost black during the summer months. It also had contrasting green veins. Unfortunately it died before I could propagate it. I'm looking for recommendations for cultivars of any Japanese maple which have a similar coloration. Any suggestions?

Also the second flush of growth would come out bright red against the darkened first flush creating a striking contrast.

Might want to try these? Koriba comes out a very deep dark plum then goes burgundy tinged with green then a stunning orange/red in the fall
Mirte comes out a beautiful chocolate brown , then olive and again a stunning orange fall colour , very large leaves as well.

    Tsukushigata would fit the bill.
