If it were not that my Big-leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) receives regular watering when I irrigate my garden, I would blame drought for the fact that it is already dropping copious numbers of leaves. This photo shows that there are still some green leaves in the canopy but that most are yellow and brown.

    Other factors:
    • We cut off a large branch 2 years ago.
    • Something is producing honeydew from early spring, on . . . I suspect aphids.
    • We live in one of the driest areas on Vancouver Island (Nanoose Bay).
    • The tree grows beside a seasonal stream that provides plenty of water through at least 6 months each year.
    • There are enormous clusters of samaras this year.
Could there be other things at play that may explain the very early leaf shed?
