That will be really useful Keith, as the thread is from 2005 and not updated until today.

OK, I can tell you a few things about this one.

Firstly it is now considered to be A. pictum, though I've always felt it may be a cross. Anyway the currently accepted name is A. pictum 'Akikaze nishiki', we should change the thread title please.

The variegation is very stable even as it grows into a large tree; and it does get big. But it is subtle, mostly noticeable in spring and fall, and difficult to photograph. It is a very beautiful and understated tree.

    A. pictum 'Shufu nishiki' is a synonym, it is the same tree.

    A. pictum 'Akikaze Yutaka' is meant to have more of the variegation, whiter (less pink) when leafing out. We have a small plant but haven't had it long enough to observe the differences.

Here are a few pictures of 'Akikaze nishiki' from October 2020.

    All done E.

Tbh I'm looking forward to the list being updated by the MS on old names with the new names next to them. This will give everyone an opportunity to use the now accepted names and to ammend any in their collections to save further confusion when discussing them on the forum.
