This is a photo of an 'Inaba Shidare' which I believe to be about 5-6 years old taken April 2003. I planted it in the Spring of 1999.

    swanny, see this thread:

    How to attach images

Please note, you may have to wait a little while for the file to upload if the picture is particularly large and you are on a dialup connection.

Obviously, this picture is not going to upload/attach following the instructions: I have selected the correct file in the browse window, selected the "add this file" bar and then selected "all done" but there is no indication that the file is uploading or that any file transfer activity is taking place.

    keep trying

Just keep trying. If the upload window times out just close it then open it again, browse and click on the file. Then wait. If the window closes again, repeat the process. When the image has loaded it will show in the window. then and only then click all done. You may have to repeat this procedure 3 or more times to get the file loaded.

    Well done Swanny
That is a beautiful specimin. I love the way Inaba Shidare flows to the ground
I had one (about 5 years old) which was shaping beautifully between 3 strategically placed rocks. The local farmer decided I needed a young bullock in my Japanese garden. When I came home after a weekend two of the main branches had been broken off. It also broke a main branch off a Shirasawanum and left massive holes all around the garden.

Anyways ... I cleaned up and am pleased to say that it is recovering, albeit now a few years behind .......

    Acer palmatum d. Inaba shidare

Here is a Inaba shidare that is about 35-40 years old in my front yard on the left and a Acer p. Wou nishiki on the right. Photo taken in the Fall time. In the middle is just an Acer palmatum f. atropurpureum.

How many years does it take the "Inaba Shidare" to grow to maximum height and width?

I just bought this one today 9th July 2020. Quite a mature specimen so not cheap, will monitor it over the next couple of years and will probably plant into the ground in September. Photo of it attached before it came home also.
    More photos to follow.

My Inaba Shidare is changing fast, the greens are very visible today on 16th July 2020.
I have had a lot of PM's asking me about the changes this year, so thought I would post this.

So 24th July 2020, almost monsoon weather here. But my new Inaba Shidare is loving it. And I'm loving this maple.

August 2nd 2020 and this one is still putting out new growth. I really don't want any more now. Still, it's lovely to see on a bright Summer's morning.

August 6th 2020 and extreme heat is forecast over the next few days, so I thought I would post photos of my dissectums before and after to show how they cope. This I feel can be useful for people considering buying a particular variety.

11th August 2020 and the heatwave continues, trying to update as many as I can as requested, even if they are not looking too good. Important to do this I feel.
Quite happy with my Inaba Shidare atm.

20th August 2020 and after days of rain after a heatwave, everything is picking up again. Severe storms coming tomorrow, so I hope I can batten down the hatches so to speak and protect my trees.
The frosted look continues and is increasing on my Inaba Shidare. Extreme weather will not stop this one from performing all Summer long.
