    went for a walk and saw this tree. leaves were sort of rubbery and had spines along the bark.

    Looks like a honey locust, Gleditsia triacanthos.

    probably the closest thing that resembles it. its a locust tree for sure. thanks.

    bumping this thread. looks more like an acacia greggiii. correct me if I'm wrong.
