I live in the South Bay Area of San Francisco (Sunnyvale) and have a tree in my yard that is dropping bunches of little red berries (see image). Any idea what this tree is and if toxic to dogs?

    Thanks, Ann

Something in the sumach family (Anacardiaceae). Any photos of the tree & leaves?

Looks like a pepper tree, but I can't tell without a picture of the whole tree.

Yes, California pepper tree, Schinus molle, which is in the Anacardiaceae, seems likely. It is generally not possible to determine the ID of a plant from just one part, so pics or description of the rest of the plant is very helpful.

(Not a California native, just a bad common name because it is so commonly grown there.)
