Odd shaped cones on Chamaecyparis...not usual shape.

Would anyone know what's up with these cones?

 

Arboretum Images 4 Check out Wayne's Word. Scroll three quarters of a way down the page and look at the arborvitae cones. I'm guessing it's the first time you've seen cones on this tree. There's some interesting variability among species, and I think this is now a different genus, too. Platycladus orientalis is what Wayne says. (I think. These are kind of old pages but I can't count the times I've come across his pages in avocational research.)

 

Well I never knew! I've seen the rounded shape with protrusions but not this elongated shape!

I thought it was a Chamaecyparis - now I see it is (was) really a Thuja now Platycadus as you noted. Thank you so much!

 

Yep, Platycladus orientalis.
