Here is a great resource on hardwood trees including maples. https://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/silvics_manual/volume_2/vol2_Table_of_contents.htm The information provided is in-depth and covers a wide range; including range of native habitat, growth conditions/ climate, seed germination methods/ reproduction, and damaging agents/ pests & disease. Acer Maple Acer barbatum Florida maple Acer macrophyllum bigleaf maple Acer negundo boxelder Acer nigrum black maple Acer pensylvanicum striped maple Acer rubrum red maple Acer saccharinum silver maple Acer saccharum sugar maple This list provides information on shade tolerance: https://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/silvics_manual/volume_2/summary_of/tree_characteristics.htm Checklist of Organisms Causing Tree Diseases https://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/...cklist_of/organisms_causing_tree_diseases.htm The glossary is a helpful resource too: Glossary
Great information of course, but some of these are no longer the accepted names, e.g. A. barbatum: Acer barbatum Michx. — The Plant List. A. nigrum is also no longer considered a separate species. Taxonomy is always what the French call a "usine à gaz" (refinery, lots of pipes and no one knows exactly how it works) but I believe we should try to follow accepted nomenclature here. Let the fighting over "field" vs. "hedge" maple begin! :) (Just joking, please don't start). Which said, thanks for the very useful post John, good stuff. -E
Thanks, glad you find it useful. I believe it was first published in 1965 and took 10 years. Then it was updated over 25 years ago in 1990. Much of the information is timeless and I was thrilled to find such a collection of in-depth information online for free (paper copy was $165). Here is a link to the two volumes that complete this reference masterpiece: Silvics Manual Volume 1-Conifers and Volume 2-Hardwoods With all the proposed budget cuts, I will not be counting on an update anytime soon!
