This is either Rhododendron canescens or Rhododendron prinophyllum- I've lost the tags and gotten them mixed up.
    Thanks for any help.

I posted some photos of both at UBCBG last year at April 3, 2015 - April in the Garden - azalea and lepidotes. Note that the links in that thread to Douglas Justice's blog article currently go to the wrong article, so we can't check if he said anything helpful regarding these two. I've reported that, so maybe it's worth checking back in the fall.

Would fragrance be of any help? It is very pronounced and quite spicy- really very nice.
And to be clear, neither of these occurred naturally on my property, I bought both of them.
    Thanks for your help.

Also at Wendy's eflora link there is a description of R. canescens mentioning flowers as "usually musky scented". The R. prinophyllum as "spicy-scented", so maybe you have it.

I thought prinophyllum when I viewed the photos in the thread she referenced above, so I am leaning in that direction.
Thank you- you have been very helpful.
