Splitting apple tree bark

Hi Everybody! We have a problem with our apple trees. This spring we found the bark had split and was peeling off leaving bare wood. In other places it seems to be 'diseased'? We're of two minds about this. Could it be winter kill--warm spring days (50F) cold nights (26/28F) or, as someone suggested without seeing the trees, might it be anthracnose canker--a bit of both--or? We'd sure appreciate some opinions please, and thank you ahead of time :-) Lynetta

 

Perhaps both. Only image 2 looks like anthracnose (even that is not clearly anthracnose). The others look more like winter damage (mostly healed).

 

Hi Terry, Thanks very much for your opinion. We feel it must be the right one as, yes, the splits are healing, and no more damage seems to have occurred since, but some of it looked suspicious. We were worried in case the trees were totalled as there was much loss of bark, but trees do seem to be able to continue, even after such an assault by weather. Anthracnose is not something I would like to have around. Lynetta
