Weather was better than the Easter Parade and Cherry Walk 2009, but same hat and same enthusiasm (and same ukulele, I think). A great turnout for the Easter Parade and Cherry Walk with Wendy Cutler. The very best way to learn about Cherry Trees in the west end - tag along with Wendy.
Here are the cherries we saw on the walk on Sunday, April 16: 'Akebono' - finished at Burrard Station but still pretty good in two nice settings with ponds and at the Rose Garden in Stanley Park, single white flowers 'Shirotae' - at Sutton Place Hotel and at the Japanese Memorial in Stanley Park, double white flowers 'Ukon' - one in the planting of 'Shirotae' at Sutton Place Hotel, just starting to bloom 'Yae-beni-shidare' - double pink weeping, at Barclay and Bute avium - sweet cherry, single white flowers, used at rootstock, particularly on what should have been 'Beni-shidare' at Barclay and Thurlow ('Beni-shidare') - well, almost all overcome by avium now at Barclay and Thurlow, pink weeping, single flowers 'Takasago' - beautiful doubly pinky flowers on an ugly tree at Broughton maybe; two somewhat nicer ones across street from each other on Cardero at Barclay 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' - beautiful large single pink flowers around the corner on Barclay at Cardero; tree not so great 'Sendai-shidare' - two umbrella-shaped trees on Comox near Chilco, single white flowers 'Ojochin' - at the Japanese Memorial, large pinky white flowers 'Rancho' - tops chopped off on Bayshore Dr, nice ones at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park, single pink flowers 'Autumnalis Rosea' - just a few double blossoms on unattractive trees at Lost Lagoon 'Accolade' - very much finished blooming on Chilco at Comox 'Shogetsu' - at the Bayshore, we saw one group of flowers at the end of a branch, large double white flowers 'Kanzan' - maybe on Haro, Shirley managed to see the first flowers open (see the last photo in posting #4) We didn't see, but are also in bloom in the West End/Stanley Park (see locations at Neighbourhood Maps) 'Umineko' - single white, green leaves 'Snow Goose' - single white, green leaves 'Tai-haku' - single white large flowers, bronze emerging leaves
April 17, 2017 - Tree Walk and Talk at UBC with Douglas Justice Even with a badly- sprained ankle, there is no slowing Douglas down. Another great walk and talk.
Missed viewing the 'Shogetsu' blossoms on the east side of the Westin Bayshore on Easter Sunday, but here they are today - to the right of the two 'Shirotae' is one 'Shogetsu' with one branch of flowers against the window pain.
April 22, 2017 Well it was a very wet day, but a great walk and talk with Alex Downie at Queen Elizabeth Park, despite the weather.
