Not sure which maples you are referring to as rare.
Many Japanese maples are advertised as rare, but readily available. Many of the retail nurseries carry a good selection of the Japanese palmatum maple cultivars. Gardenworks stores in Burnaby, Amsterdam in Pitt Meadows, Triple Tree in Maple Ridge usually have good selections and various sizes. Maybe Phoenix Perennials in Richmond and Southlands near UBC would be closer for you.
There are lots of photos and comments in the photo section of this forum.
The Select Maples link doesn't work for me , not sure why. Maybe out of business ?

Welcome to the forums mals, you may find this nursery site in Rosedale (near Chilliwack) interesting.

Yes, seems a good small and well run nursery and they work hard to keep it that way. Hopefully they didn't have too much ice damage this winter.
A nice display garden , too.

Thanks. Chimera. I have added Pacific Northwest Propagators to the Maples resource page (and the Pac NW nurseries page). Actually, that was way more work than I was expecting, as the file hit the maximum size, so there are now two resource files for Maples nurseries:
Maples: Nurseries Specializing in Maples in North America
    and
Maples: Nurseries Specializing in Maples Outside of North America

The grammar is not quite right, as the location modifies the word "nurseries", but I wanted the word Maples to appear closer to the front of the title.

In the lower mainland , Cedar rim in Langley and Arts on 192 in Surrey have the largest selections I've seen so far here and decent prices too . I haven't been to PNW Propagators . Art Knapps in Surrey by white rock has a decent selection too, fair priced on most of it . 5 maples nursery on #1 in Abbotsford has small selection but good prices . Triple tree is pricier than these others
